Hollywood Capitalizes on Lawyers' Poor Image
Article By:Guy Incognito

Real-life lawyers don't exactly have a sterling reputation as honest, trustworthy individuals, and Hollywood loves to capitalize on that tarnished image. With a few notable exceptions, fictional lawyers generally walk and usually cross the fine line between good and evil.

Few people--let alone lawyers--can match the integrity and outright humanity of Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). Then again, not too many actors can match Gregory Peck's ability to make us believe that nice guy's do finish first. But is it really so difficult to create a lawyer the audience can admire?

In a culture that eats scandal like candy, it's small wonder that we seem to prefer movies that explore the dark side of lawyers. The concept of innocent until proven guilty loses much of its impact against a legal system that endorses the whatever-it-takes-to-win approach.

Hardly a television goes by without some sort of legal drama gracing the airwaves. In most cases, the lawyers portrayed on such shows run the gamut from moralistic to depraved. The line between the good lawyers and their seedy counterparts is clearly drawn in the beginning. Somewhere along the way, however--especially if a series last beyond the first season--the line becomes blurred. Shady lawyers start to show a few redeeming qualities, while the good lawyers sprout moral blemishes.

Even celluloid lawyers who are generally honest characters make dubious moral and legal choices. In The Big Easy (1987), D.A. Ann Osborne (Ellen Barkin) becomes romantically involved with a detective her office considers corrupt. In Suspect (1987), public defender Kathleen Riley (Cher) breaks the law by communicating and consorting with a juror. (Mind you, considering both movies co-starred Dennis Quaid, who can really fault them?)

The Devil's Advocate (1997) goes, perhaps, farther than any other movie in its exploration of a lawyer's moral failings. In this clever and often grisly film, John Milton (played to gleeful perfection by Al Pacino) sets out to tempt young attorney Kevin Lomax (Keanu Reeves) with all the best vices. Turns out Milton is really Lucifer, and Lomax seems to lack the moral stamina to resist. Even when good seems to overcome evil, Milton has one more card to play--"Vanity. My favorite vice."

Sometimes, though, even disreputable characters are salvaged. In The Verdict (1982), Frank Galvin (Paul Newman) starts off as an alcoholic ambulance chaser, but slowly evolves into caring, committed attorney whose willing to go to the wall for his client--partly because he sees a chance to restore his shattered reputation, but also because it's the right thing to do.

We'll probably never see an influx of honest, hard-working lawyers in film and on television. After all, who would take the time to watch virtue in action?

Joystiq, CA - 8 hours ago Revolution] controller.". "We have partners like EA and Ubisoft and Activision and THQ excited about developing for the Revolution.". In
Heres my prediction: Nintendo will release all the old games for free but stupid people who don't know how to read the box the Revolution comes in will be suckered by the sells staff at Best Buy into buying the libarary at the counter for a couple of grand. BestBuy stock will increase 7 fold but they will buy it all up. BestBuy buys Google and Nintendo and combines them into the ultimate apple fighting orange game system. People will burn revolutions to stay warm as they spent all their money on the Googtendo BestBuy Evolutionbox. The good people of earth will plead with Googtendo to allow them the means to buy food and clothing but Googtendo will deny them, stating their bottom line would suffer. The people will obey since the Evolutionbox is so advanced that halfway threw typing "happiness" on the system, the user will recieve a shot of dopamine directly to the brainstem. Other advanced features will include downloading emulators to the neural cortex complete with every rom for every system ever made including the Evolutionbox. The self-referentral nature of this paradox will cause the universe to fold in on itself inside a intelegent young slave womens brain, causing a halt-state in the universal CPU which Googtendo now owns. Googtendo starts selling refurbished universal CPUs in a gaming system designed for multi-dimensional beings. With the googleplex dollars Googtendo aquires with this daring new buiness method, they will purchase $god.
